“The media is the lens by which the people view society”- CEGP
“It is not the media’s job to uplift President Aquino’s self-image. The media is the lens by which the people view society, and to skew it in favor of the ruling clique goes against the principles of media reporting.” Trina Federis, College Editors Guild of the Philippines national president said in reaction to President Aquino’s remark regarding the alleged negativity of the media.
“The media does not exist to assuage the President’s ego. The media exists as the government’s watchdog, a role given to it as the Fourth Estate. To ask the media to report positive news all the time is a tall order.” Federis stated.
“President Aquino is acting like school administrators who complain that campus publications do nothing but report bad news. He is also acting like his predecessor, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. We will not be surprised if such an attitude leads to policies detrimental to the practice of freedom of expression.” Federis concluded.###
