PNU students to join National Youth Walkout

After the persistent build-up activities of progressive organizations in PNU this week, students as well as few allied professors will march their way to Mendiola to protest against Aquino’s budget cut in the education sector, September 23.

With the P92.3 M budget slash in PNU this year, plus the proposed P12.8 M cut in 2012, the future teachers cannot help but express rage against this because of the threats of tuition and other fees increase (TOFI), commercialization, privatization and other means that the government implements to let the tertiary education gradually become self-sufficient and financially independent.

In addition, the proposed budget of PNU in 2012 is P754.9 M while the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) approved and proposed budget for PNU is P284.9 M. Only 37.7% of the PNU proposed budget was granted by government subsidy.

These facts and figures force the whole PNU community, as initiated by the Student Government, The Torch Publications, ANAKBAYAN-PNU, GABRIELA Youth-PNU, ACT Teachers Party-list-PNU, STAND-PNU, members of Movement for Quality Education (MQE) alliance, and Office of the Student Regent, to defend the students’ right to accessible and quality education for all.
