Students, teachers, employees and other sectors of the University of the Philippines (UP) -Diliman community jogged around the academic oval early this morning as part of its campaign against cuts on the budget for education and other social services.

A short program was held before the event, in which administrators including UP Diliman Chancellor Caesar Saloma spoke about the declining budget of state universities and colleges (SUCs). Statements were also given to other joggers and passersby.

“Aquino is abandoning his responsibility to provide quality and affordable social services, such as public schools and hospitals, for every Filipino,” said Soraya Escandor, UP Diliman University Student Council councilor.

The UP system currently has P5.75 billion for this year as allotted by the 2011 National Expenditure Program. For 2012, it will only operate on a P5.54 billion budget, a mere 32 percent of its P17 billion proposed budget.

This activity, entitled Run for Greater State Subsidy, “shows unity not only among the students, but also the faculty, administrators, staff and other members of the community,” Escandor said. However, it is not only focused on UP’s needs, but on other state universities and colleges’ as well, Escandor added.

This event, organized by UP Kilos Na, an alliance of different organizations, is also a build-up campaign for the major student strikes being planned throughout the country for September 29-30, calling for the cancellation of budget cuts for all SUCs.
