CEGP to Pres. Aquino: Uphold UN resolution regarding Beng’s killing

It has been more than 9 years since the murder of campus journalist Benjaline “Beng” Hernandez along with three others, yet justice is nowhere in sight.

Today is her birthday. She would’ve been 32.

She was College Editors Guild of the Philippines’ (CEGP) vice president for Mindanao and deputy secretary general of Karapatan-Southern Mindanao, a human rights group. She was a beloved daughter, a friend, a colleague and more.

She could have pursued endeavors that would’ve given her the “easy” life, yet she chose not to. She chose to defend and help the marginalized.

She was murdered for her convictions. Her murderers have yet to be punished for their crimes.

And she wasn’t the only victim. All over the country, the victims of extrajudicial killings number in the thousands, hundreds have disappeared overnight (and even in plain daylight) or have been politically incarcerated.

Today is her birthday. She would’ve been 32.

One wonders whether the current events circling around Cong. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would be a prologue to the justice Beng’s family, her friends and colleagues have been fighting for all these years.

We certainly hope so.

But hope is a fickle concept if not coupled with action. We enjoin President Benigno Aquino III to uphold the UN resolution on Beng and her companions’ killings, which states that the Philippine government is accountable for their killings.

To that end, we will not stop trying, we will not stop moving and fighting for what could be the greatest birthday gift we all could give our beloved Beng: justice, in the truest sense of the word.

Happy 32nd birthday, Beng.
Justice for Beng Hernandez! Stop the Killings!
