CEGP SAMAR’S STATEMENT CONDEMNING THE ARREST AND DETENTION OF CEGP MEMBERS

We, the members of the campus press, condemn in strongest terms the arrest and detention of *Christopher Pasion*, national secretary general of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines, and *Rodel Valenzuela* of *The Catalyst*, official student publication of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

They were violently dispersed by police elements during a protest rally at Mendiola. The protest rally is in line with the Occupy Mendiola mobilization organized by different progressive organizations in bringing forward the disappointments of the people over the rotten system that put the marginalized sectors in a stink decay of poverty. We deem such as a glaring violation of the basic human right to free expression and free speech. Indeed, the government has never been sincere in its promise of listening to the pleas of its impoverished people. Instead, violence has always been the response of the government in answering the legitimate demands of its citizens, such as how the statistics of extra-judicial killings remains undisturbed and how it remains inutile in ending the culture of impunity.

It is in this grim scenario that we contend that there are no safe sides, only passivity and resistance. And we choose the path of dissent. We enjoin our co-campus journalists to go out from their publication offices and join the struggle of the basic masses for a just society. The prevailing social conditions compel us to go beyond mere writing. We call on our co-campus journalists and all the freedom-loving citizens to condemn this harassment as a violation of our fundamental democratic rights.

Defend campus press freedom!
Uphold press freedom!
Stop violent dispersals in protest rallies!
