Thousands of people from various sectors massed up in the country’s central business district in Ayala Ave. in Makati City to express the people’s distaste to President Benigno S. Aquino III’s anomalous lump-sum funds and the use of such to consolidate his power in both houses of Congress and other government agencies.
“The Filipino youth have had enough of Aquino’s hypocrisy and shrewdness,” said Marc Lino Abila, National Secretary General of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines. “The anomalies in the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) are proofs that this administration is self-serving and probably even more corrupt than the previous administration of Arroyo.”
“The use of the people’s money to further consolidate Aquino’s control in the government is despicable while millions of Filipinos continue to suffer from poverty,” Abila explained. “Instead of directly allocating these funds to social services such as education, health, and housing, Aquino uses his pork barrel to favor his political and big business allies through Public-Private Partnerships and Conditional Cash Transfer which do not address the problems of our people.”
“More than three years have passed but Aquino’s slogan of ‘Daang Matuwid’ still remains a slogan and out sight,” Abila said. “We need a systemic change and not just a change in regime to eliminate corruption and a government which shall truly serve the interest of the Filipinos and not the pockets of those in power.” ###
