College editors scoff at Aquino’s comment on media’s negative reporting

“With President Aquino’s recent statement on media reportage, he clearly does not want the people to know the truth,” said Marc Lino Abila, National Secretary General of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP).

More than a week after the fourth year of Ampatuan Massacre, Aquino on Tuesday spoke at Pulong Bulungan at Sofitel Philippine Plaza where he slammed the media for negative reporting on his administration’s response to the Yolanda aftermath.

“This is another blow to press freedom in the Philippines. Aquino is keen and repeatedly criticizes the work of the media since he rose to power,” exclaimed Abila.

“He speaks as if the media is his public relations machinery, which is not. The media’s duty is to tell the people about the truth,” Abila explained. “This is an outright violation to the freedom of the press.”###
