The College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) condemns the arrest of Em Mijares, a 19-year-old 4th year student of Ateneo de Naga University and member of Youth ACT Now! and Kabataan Partylist,  who shouted in protest while BS Aquino is delivering his speech during the Independence Day celebration in Naga City.

Mijares bellowed “Patalsikin ang Pork Barrel King! Walang pagbabago sa Pilipinas!” was a critical response of the Filipino youth to the worsening conditions of the Philippine society including rampant corruption, abuse of power, unending impunity, loss of sovereignty and inadequate social services. Thus, BS Aquino is not different from his predecessors who perpetuated a reactionary government.

Mijares’ arrest signifies that for 116 years the Filipino people are not yet free. If a mere exercise of rightful expression is a basis for incarceration, then the BS Aquino regime is no different from the fascist orientation of the Marcos Martial Law.

According to Vince Casilihan of Karapatan-Bikol, Mijares was violently arrested by members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) and is currently detained in Naga City Police Office.

The protests in Naga, Manila, and other parts of the nation attest a collective disgust to the current administration.

It is a blow to the BS Aquino government that a 19-year-old student is willing to be imprisoned because of airing a protest compared to him and all his allies who deny evident negligence, abuse and corruption.###
