Students from different universities and colleges in Metro Manila hanged Christmas lanterns bearing their call to redundant and exorbitant other school fees (OSF) on December 2, Tuesday at Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) in Sta. Mesa, Manila.

Led by the Rise for Education Alliance, the students demanded that these other school fees should be scrapped as these fees are not only excessive but also abusive to the parents and students.

“We are against the continuing deregulation of the Aquino government to such fees through the Commission on Higher Education. Students and parents are having a hard time to send their children to school, but these OSFs are getting in the way of their dream to have education,” said Charina Claustro, chairperson of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) Metro Manila chapter.

OSFs include development fees, energy fees, registration fees, library fees, laboratory fees, athletic fees, internet fees, and late payment dues.DSC_0387

According to the Rise for Education Alliance, OSFs are even more expensive than the tuition fee students are already paying. In a research done by Kabataan Partylist, P13.5 billion was collected by 110 state universities and colleges from their students in a span of four years apart from tuition.

“These fees are rampant in both private and state universities and colleges in the country. We already took the necessary steps in forging unity among the students nationwide and we are now persuading our lawmakers in the House and Senate to support our call to scrap other school fees,” Claustro added.

“We want every Filipino to have education. These Christmas lanterns we hanged here at PUP symbolize the youth’s request this Christmas to junk OSFs and stop tuition increase,” explained Claustro.

The Rise for Education Alliance also called for the youth, teachers, parents, and other education advocates to join the call of the youth for quality and accessible education for the Filipino people.###
